The Senior Controls Engineer will lead the design, development, installation, and maintenance of control systems for a chemical manufacturing plant. This role is responsible for ensuring the automation systems operate effectively, safely, and in compliance with all relevant regulations. The Senior Controls Engineer will work closely with process engineers, maintenance teams, and operations to optimize production processes and drive continuous improvement efforts through automation and control strategies.
Responsibilities:
Control Systems Design & Development:
- Design, program, and troubleshoot PLC, HMI, SCADA, and DCS systems to monitor and control chemical plant processes.
- -Lead projects to develop, upgrade, or modify automation and control systems for improved process efficiency, safety, and reliability.
- – Design and implement control logic, electrical schematics, and instrumentation for new projects or process improvements.
Maintenance & Troubleshooting:
- Provide technical support for plant operations, ensuring control systems are functioning properly and meet production demands.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve control system issues (e.g., PLC faults, sensor failures, etc.).
- Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation including functional design specifications, IO lists, control narratives, and network architecture.
Process Optimization:
- Collaborate with process engineers to optimize chemical manufacturing processes using advanced control strategies and automation technologies.
- Analyze system performance, perform root-cause analysis for failures, and implement corrective actions.
Compliance & Safety:
- Ensure control systems comply with industry standards, plant safety protocols, and environmental regulations.
- Assist with safety instrumented systems (SIS) design and implementation, including safety PLCs and HAZOP recommendations.
Project Management:
- Manage the full life cycle of control system projects, including design, implementation, testing, and commissioning.
- Develop project timelines, budgets, and manage resources to ensure project goals are met.
Continuous Improvement:
- Lead initiatives to identify opportunities for process automation, reduce downtime, improve system efficiency, and enhance safety.
- Stay current on new control technologies and best practices, and evaluate their potential application within the plant.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- At least 7 years’ experience working in an industrial manufacturing environment
- 3-5 years in a chemical process environment.
- Experience with variable frequency drives, PLC, Foxboro, Allen Bradley
- Experience in batch and continuous process control optimization
- Electrical monitoring experience a plus
